The Problem I’m Actually Solving: Brightening a Dark Living Room

I have not started this project yet. I want to be upfront about that, because I know how these posts usually go someone shows you a gorgeous "before and after" and skips the part where they stood in their living room for two weeks just looking at it, overwhelmed, with three kids underfoot.

That's where I am right now. So let's talk about the plan before I inevitably deviate from it.

Our living room is dark. Not moody-dark-on-purpose, just dark-because-we-picked-a-color-in-2019-and-never-questioned-it dark. Between that and Ohio winters, by January this room feels like a cave we're all trapped in together.

Three things are happening:

1. Repainting the walls an off-white to actually bounce light around the room
2. Switching out the mantel décor because it's been the same since we moved in and I'm bored of it

Why Off-White Paint (Not Stark White) for a Cozy Bright Room

I went back and forth on this more than I'd like to admit. Stark white felt like it might read cold and a little sterile with our furniture, and I didn't want the room to feel like a doctor's office. Off-white gets me the brightness without losing the warmth. Ask me again in three weeks if I still agree with myself.

Mantel Decor Swap: Simple Pieces That Last

This is the easy, low-stakes part of the project, which is exactly why I'm tackling it. New paint color means the current decor (picked to match walls I'm about to paint over) won't work anymore anyway. I'm treating this as a chance to simplify less clutter, more pieces that can stay through multiple seasons instead of decor I have to fully swap out every few months.

Full transparency: I haven't installed this yet, so I can't tell you if it was a good decision. That's intentional I'd rather be honest about the process than pretend I know how it'll turn out. Once it's up, I'll be doing a separate post specifically reviewing the product itself: how it actually looked coming out of the box, how hard (or not) it was to install, and whether I'd buy it again.

What I’m Nervous About (Paint Color, Install, Kids Underfoot)

- Paint color looking completely different once it's actually on a full wall vs. a sample swatch
- Whether the paneling install is going to be a weekend project or a "why did I do this to myself" project
- Doing any of this with three kids underfoot, because nothing in this house happens without an audience
