When Your Kids Get Your Husband's Hair
I have pin straight hair. Always have. I have never once in my life had to think about curl definition, or what happens when you brush curly hair dry. It simply was not part of my world.
And then I had daughters with full-on Shirley Temple spring curls.
If you had seen my oldest daughter's hair before I figured out what I was doing, you would have laughed — and honestly I would not have blamed you. Full frizz ball. Not because she had bad hair — she has absolutely beautiful hair — but because I was treating curly hair like straight hair and those are not the same thing at all.
I knew a few basics going in. I knew you do not brush curly hair dry because it turns into a poof of frizz. I had read about wide tooth combs. But knowing the rules and actually getting the results are two different things — and what finally made the real difference was the products.
Two of my three kids have these curls — my oldest daughter and my youngest daughter, both with the same gorgeous spring curl pattern. This post is everything I have learned about caring for their hair, the products that actually work, and the morning refresh trick that brings day-two curls back to life in about sixty seconds.
The Golden Rules of Curly Kid Hair
Before we get into products, here are the non-negotiables I have learned — the rules that apply regardless of which products you use:
Never brush curly hair dry. This is the one that most people know and it is true — brushing dry curly hair separates the curl pattern and turns it into frizz.
Only detangle with a wide tooth comb, and only when wet. Wet hair plus conditioner plus a wide tooth comb — that is the only safe combination for detangling curly hair without destroying the curl pattern or causing unnecessary breakage. Work from the ends up, not root to tip, and go slowly.
Dry gently. Aggressive towel drying = frizz.
These three rules alone will improve curly hair results dramatically even before you change a single product. But the products are what take it from improved to actually great.

1. Fairy Tales Curly-Q Shampoo
This was the shampoo that changed everything for us. Standard shampoos — even gentle ones — can strip the natural oils that curly hair needs to stay defined and moisturized. The Fairy Tales Curly-Q line is specifically formulated for curly hair and it makes a noticeable difference in how the curls look and feel after washing.
It lathers gently, rinses clean, and does not leave hair feeling stripped or dry. If you are currently using a regular kids shampoo on curly hair this is the single most impactful swap you can make.
2. Fairy Tales Curly-Q Conditioner
Goes hand in hand with the shampoo and this is also where the wide tooth comb comes in. Apply the conditioner generously, work it through with your fingers first, and then detangle with the wide tooth comb while it is still in the hair. The conditioner acts as a slip agent that lets the comb glide through without pulling or breaking the curl.
Leave it in for a minute or two before rinsing. You will see the curls start to clump together and form their pattern — that is exactly what you want.
3. Not Your Mother's Curl Talk Refreshing Spray
This is the product that saves us on every non-wash day — and if you have a curly-haired kid you know that washing every day is not the move. Curly hair needs its natural oils and washing daily strips them out.
After sleep, curly hair is always going to be a little messy. That is just the reality. But a few spritzes of this spray on the hair, a quick scrunch with your hands, and a light pass with a damp wide tooth comb and the curls come right back to life. It is genuinely one of the most satisfying morning routines once you figure it out — takes about sixty seconds and the transformation is remarkable.
We use this on the days between washes and it keeps the curls looking defined and fresh without weighing the hair down.
4. SoCozy Kids Curl Multi-Styler
This is what we use for flyaways and finishing — a small amount worked through the hair after washing or refreshing to smooth down any frizz and keep the curls defined throughout the day. A little goes a long way with this one. Too much and the hair can feel weighed down or crunchy — start with a pea-sized amount and work up from there if needed.
It smells great, and makes the difference between curls that look polished and curls that look a little unfinished around the edges.
5. Fairy Tales Rosemary Repel Spray
Okay this one is slightly different from the rest of the list but I would feel genuinely irresponsible not including it — especially for school and daycare days.
Lice. Nobody wants to talk about it. Nobody wants to deal with it. And yet it is one of those things that is genuinely just part of having kids in school or daycare environments where children are in close contact every day.
Fairy Tales Rosemary Repel uses rosemary, tea tree, and peppermint — scents that lice naturally avoid — as a preventative measure. We use the spray on school and daycare days as an extra layer of protection. Has it been tested in our house specifically? No, and I hope it stays that way. But peace of mind on drop-off days is worth a lot and this one delivers it.
What My Daughters' Hair Looks Like Now
Spring curls. Defined, bouncy, shiny spring curls.
It took some trial and error and a few product swaps to get here. But the routine is simple now.
If you are a straight-haired mom staring at your curly-haired kid wondering what you are doing wrong — you are probably not doing anything wrong. You just need the right products. Start there. The curls will thank you.
